Type Locality and Naming

Along Mount Karai, West Uzbekistan. O.S. Vyalov, S.I. Ilyin, G.Ya. Meyer, and others, 1947 (158, p.20).

Synonym: Karaizskaya Formation, Караизская св.


Lithology and Thickness

I.S. Suleimanov identified three sub-suites in the suite.

Upper sub-suite - variegated sands, sandstones, gravelites with clay and siltstone (aleurolite) layers. Thickness 30-50m.

Middle sub-suite - gravelites, greenish-gray sandstones, sands with clay layers. Thickness 24-50m.

Lower sub-suite - alternation of conglomerates, gravelites, variegated siltstone (aleurolites) with clay layers. Thickness 40-80m.


Lithology Pattern: 
Coarse-grained sandstone


Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

The suite conformably overlies the Azkamar Fm

Upper contact

It is overlain with erosion by the Sukaytin Fm.

Regional extent

Mounts Zirabulak-Ziaetdinsky, Karai, in the adjacent plains, well.

Middle sub-suite – Contains marine bivalve mollusks Korobkovitrigonia korobkovi Sav.; gastropods - Nerineoptyxis amudariensis Pchel., foraminifera - Evolutinella ex gr. asiatica Zhuk., Trochammina ex gr. kugitangensis N. Byk.

Lower sub-suite – Contains foraminifera - Trochammina planoconvexa Mam., T. crumensis Tapp., Gaudryinopsis karaisensis (Suleim.), G. oblongus (Zasp.).


Age 

Upper sub-suite – Assigned to the lower + middle Cenomanian. Middle sub-suite – Assigned to the upper Albian. Lower sub-suite – Assigned to the lower-middle Albian.Assigned to the lower Albian - lower + middle Cenomanian; according to I.S. Suleimanov (464), - to the Albian - Cenomanian, in the Stratigraphic section (446) - to the Albian (?) Senonian (?). (313; 445).
